Royal Dance Conservatory: Winnipeg Dance Academy at Canadian National Dance Championships Judges Choice Award Winnipegs
The morning of CNDC came and I was so exited. I love going to competitions. CNDC was a great competition, RDC did really well as a studio and as individuals it was a rewarding experience. The team started with solos and duets but we all there to support our team mates even if not all of us were dancing. That is what I love about RDC, everyone is always there to support you no matter what happens, even if you mess up some turns and almost fall off the stage. That Friday night we had our first group dance, our lyrical small group. It was my first dance of the competition and I was super pumped just to get on stage and dance. When i got off stage I felt great because lyrical is my favourite style and I felt like I did a good job.
The Saturday I woke up pretty early to get ready. That morning we had our contemporary small group, Say Something, one of my favourite dances. I arrived at the convention centre to start to warm up, stretch and then we got our words painted on us. Some of my favourite memories at competitions are not only performing, but also the none stop laughs and fun times we have hanging out as a team. The time came for us to perform. I love performing the routine Say Something. This is our dance about bullying and has such a powerful message and the choreography is amazing as well. There is a part in the dance were the words say “how many of you out there have been a victim to bullying?” and then we all raise our hands, my friend Hannah said she saw the camera guy raise his hand. I found that kind of funny and  pretty cool. After we danced there were a lot of people coming up to us to tell us how much they loved the dance and that we made them cry. At awards we won a judges choice award for Say Something they called it the “voice award” for the powerful meaning the dance has.

On Sunday I had a group dance and one of my solos. I again had to wake up early and do my hair, it was only a ponytail so it didn't take to long. I went down to the convention centre and performed. I had jazz small group, that dance is a lot of fun to perform because its fast and there is a lot of fun jumps and kicks and I always enjoy performing it. That night I had my lyrical solo. One of the hardest things about competitions for me is just getting in the right mental state and not being so nervous. Backstage its hard not to watch the other people in your category and not to compare yourself to them. But at RDC, I always have friends and my teacher backstage to help me get in the right zone and ready to perform. I went on stage for my solo and I felt like I was doing okay. At RDC we’re encouraged to remember that when we go on stage to perform to just enjoy ourselves and not worry about winning or losing but just dance because we love it. “Dance to express not impress” as Miss Nicole would say.

The day came for my last solo and I was feeling a lot better than my first one. This time I was super exited to perform. That night was my jazz solo, my other favourite dance. I love this dance because it challenges me and pushes me out of my comfort zone. I love the Competitive team at RDC because no matter what we place or how we do we are always supported.

What Our Dancers Are Saying

Our daughter Hailey has been dancing at RDC for over 5 years now. We have watched her blossom from a shy little girl who was so nervous to dance to this incredibly confident performer. Miss Nicole, the studio director is so involved and you see how much she genuinely cares about the kids but also the studio. We look forward to many more years with RDC and recommend the studio to anyone who wants to be more than just a number.
